Running Injuries in Bishop's Stortford: A Physio's Guide to Staying on the Pavement

Bishop's Stortford has quietly become one of the best running towns in Hertfordshire. Between Castle Park parkrun every Saturday, the Stort Valley Way for longer weekend miles, and the ever-growing Stortford Running Club, there are more runners pounding local pavements and trails than ever.

And as a physio clinic serving the town, we see the other side of that too. Every week runners come in with sore knees, tight calves, grumbling Achilles and shin splints. The good news? Most running injuries are preventable, and nearly all of them respond brilliantly to early treatment.

Here's what we see most often, how to spot trouble early, and what to do about it.

The five most common running injuries we treat

1. Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain)

A dull ache around or behind the kneecap, usually worse going down stairs or after a long run. It's almost always caused by weakness in the glutes and hips, which changes how the knee tracks. The fix isn't rest alone, it's targeted strengthening work.

2. Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)

Pain along the inside of your shin bone, especially in the first few minutes of a run. Often caused by ramping up mileage too quickly or running in worn-out shoes. Left alone, shin splints can progress to stress fractures, so don't push through.

3. Achilles tendinopathy

Stiffness and tenderness in the Achilles tendon, classically worse first thing in the morning. Common in runners over 40 and in anyone adding hill work or speed sessions. Responds very well to a specific type of loading exercise, but needs to be managed correctly.

4. Plantar fasciitis

That sharp heel pain when you first step out of bed. The plantar fascia on the underside of your foot becomes irritated, usually from overuse or poor foot biomechanics. Ice, stretching and the right exercises usually sort it, but it can become chronic if ignored.

5. ITB (iliotibial band) syndrome

A sharp, specific pain on the outside of the knee that usually kicks in after a set distance (for many runners it's around the 5k mark). Often mistaken for a knee problem when the real cause is higher up, in the hip.

The warning signs you should not ignore

There's a difference between normal post-run soreness and an injury brewing. Book an appointment if:

  • Pain lasts longer than three or four days after a run

  • You're changing the way you run to avoid pain (limping, shortening your stride)

  • Pain gets worse during a run rather than easing off after the first mile

  • You feel pain at rest, or it wakes you up at night

  • There's swelling, bruising, or a feeling of instability in the joint

The rule of thumb we give patients: if something has niggled for more than a week, get it looked at. A 45 minute physio assessment now saves you months on the sidelines later.

What to do before you book

A few things you can try in the short term, especially for minor niggles:

  • Back off the mileage, don't stop completely unless pain is sharp

  • Swap a run for a swim, bike or walk to keep moving without the impact

  • Check your trainers, most running shoes are past their best after 500 to 600 miles

  • Ice for 15 minutes after a run if an area is sore or swollen

  • Avoid the temptation to stretch aggressively, this often makes things worse

If things aren't settling within a week, that's your cue to get an assessment.

How we help runners at Choice Physio

Running injuries aren't just about the sore bit. Knee pain is often a hip problem. Achilles issues are often a calf strength problem. Shin splints are often a training load problem. A proper running assessment looks at the full picture.

At our Sawbridgeworth clinic, just a few minutes from Bishop's Stortford, we offer:

  • Full biomechanical and gait assessment

  • Hands on treatment to settle acute pain

  • Tailored strength and conditioning programmes

  • Return to running plans so you don't come back injured

  • Sports massage and shockwave therapy where needed

We work with runners at every level, from parkrun regulars to marathon finishers and club athletes. Whatever your goals, we'll build a plan to get you back to them.
