What is Shockwave Therapy

Updated: Oct 6, 2019

Can Shockwave Therapy help you?

Choice Physio Ltd are now exclusively offering Shockwave Therapy in our Sawbridgeworth clinic. This is a renowned treatment modality which, in addition to our other treatments, can help to speed up the recovery of many soft tissue conditions. Shockwave therapy is highly regarded as one of the leading non-invasive treatments for acute and chronic tendon conditions (particularly persistent, long term tendon injuries / pain).

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that sends high energy sound waves into the affected area to accelerate healing. The treatment increases blood flow, decreases localised pain and stimulates cell regeneration - this encourages the body to repair itself. Shockwave can also break down injured tissues and calcifications.

The treatment has NICE guidance for many tendon injuries / presentations, which is the gold standard for therapists to refer to when using evidence based practice.

Common indications include:

  • Achilles Tendinopathy / tendinitis, Tennis / golfer’s elbow

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Patella tendinitis (knee pain)

  • Hip pain

  • Shoulder pain / rotator cuff injuries

The shockwaves can also be used to help treat long standing muscle tension and to break down trigger points (knots) within large muscle groups.

How long does it take to help?

The amount of sessions required is patient dependant, but usually there are excellent results within 4-6 sessions of use.

How successful is the treatment?

Shockwave Therapy has been clinically proven and is recognised by top Orthopaedic hospitals in London. It is also used by top premier league football clubs, and now Choice Physio in Sawbridgeworth! Depending on the condition being treated, success rates range from 60-90%. Studies have shown 90% of patients with Achilles tendinitis / tendinopathy will experience a full recovery or significant reduction in their pain or injury with Shockwave therapy.

If you feel shockwave would benefit your injury or you would simply like to enquire further into this treatment, please do not hesitate to ask your therapist in your session or call the clinic on 01279 882518.
